Blowout preventer condition monitoring for an upstream operator

Live BOP data streamed to the cloud, valve cycle counts automated, and condition-based maintenance made possible under the 21-day testing regime.

Challenge

Post-Macondo regulation required the BOP to be pressure-tested every fourteen days, costing two or more days of downtime each time and shortening valve life. The BOP control system gave little feedback on valve open/close cycles, and the operator wanted to document cycle counts to argue for less frequent testing.

Solution

Arundo streamed live data from the BOP to a cloud platform through Arundo Edge, automated the cycle-count calculations used for diagnostics, and built an end-to-end application compliant with the new 21-day pressure-testing frequency. Real-time condition analysis of valve usage made used-based maintenance schedulable.

Impact

Lower OPEX through insight into valve deterioration and condition-based maintenance.
