Measuring gas combustion unit vibrations to verify repairs and compare the fleet
Vibration sensors on three vessels' GCUs, streamed through Arundo Edge, gave the operator objective evidence that a burner replacement reduced vibration.
Challenge
No vibration data existed for the GCUs, so the mechanical load during operation was unknown. Vessels are remote with limited and unstable connectivity, sensors had to be fitted by crew during normal operation, and without labelled failures it was unclear which vibration patterns mean damage.
Solution
Arundo fitted sensors at three heights on each GCU and connected them to Arundo Edge on three vessels, buffering data locally and streaming it to the cloud. The data showed vibrations flat up to 2,000–2,500 kg/h of gas flow and rising steeply above it, strongest at the top of the unit, and compared one vessel before and after a burner component replacement.
Impact
The operator verified with data that the replacement reduced peak and average radial vibrations, and now has an objective basis to compare GCUs across the fleet and assess repairs.
